You have to make two posts first. It's a little annoying at first but it largely keeps bots out. We're looking at ways to use the Google ReCaptcha and other things but for this weekend we wanted to keep things relatively porous so as to not inconvenience people too much as the bulk of people registered for the site, but not overrun the site with bots. I've banned quite a few already!

We tested the announcements etc. but it's mixed in with a lot of other information. I'll make a separate post now so that becomes more evident.

Matt K - just wanted to PM you a reminder per the PM conversation on the previous TC iteration.

This is a bit of a faff...

So, to avoid having bots spamming the forum, we have rules that force humans to spam the forum to get enough posts instead :P

Maybe it would be useful to have a separate subforum for this?

Anyway, this is my second post, I think. So now I can PM as well. :good:

Just as easy to have a single thread dedicated to it instead of a whole forum for it! :) Easy to ignore a single post! (Or... something!)

I am experiencing difficulties with PM as well.

My first two posts have been acknowledged.
I just sent two PMs, but they appear in my Outbox only.
My Sent Messages Box show 0 (zero)

What to do?

The phpbb software is a bit peculiar this way. When you send a PM, it goes to your outbox UNTIL THE RECIPIENT VIEWS THE MESSAGE. Strange, I know, and a bit counterintuitive, but that's the way it is. If it's sitting in your outbox, they haven't opened it yet.

Strange way to do it, but handy in that you know whether or not they actually saw the message.

Thanks for the explanation. I agree, it is odd.

Will the recipient receive any notification that they have received a PM? (via email perhaps?)

When you send an e-mail, a number shows up in the Notifications block. The number is the number of PM's sent. I believe it also shows in the PM's if you open it.

I believe they can set in the UserCP (control panel) to receive emails regarding PMs. I also get a little indicator (bright red) on my little "inbox" icon in the upper right corner of my theme (Latte).

So yes, it should be apparent. If you're on the site, at least. For people who log in only infrequently, I'd set PMs to email you...if that's an option. Can't remember if it is.

Yes it is.
You can select notifications by email. I hope it works.

Thanks!

FYI

For those of you who log in infrequently, the email notification option works.

You will receive an email notifying you that you have received a PM.

This will enable one to reply promptly.

Recommended.

Thanks for beta-testing this and reporting back. I'll change my setting now, too.

OK, good, this topic answered my question as to why I could not answer a PM... and this post hopefully solves the problem! :)

You don't yet have full access to the PM system because you need to have two approved posts. This drastically reduces our spam volume. As it stands, you actually shouldn't be able to send PMs to anyone but moderators and admins so if you can let me know and I'll investigate. If you post one more time, your second is usually approved shortly thereafter and you then gain access to other members communication details if they choose to list it as well as the ability to send them messages.

As far as the speed, it should be nearly instantaneous so if that is not the case then I can investigate. Note that if someone doesn't open your email it will remain in your outbox so it may have been delivered but just not viewed. There are... several dozen messages for me which I haven't gotten to after a hiatus from being a new parent so if some of them to are me I apologize, that's not a system issue but a "pebuak" issue on my part :shuffle:
