Black Lacquer Kings?

Any info on these? They seem to pop up on ebay occasionally. Checked retail pages but nothing shows up.

I don't think King ever offered black lacquer in a commercial product.

But several after market vendors did offer black lacquer.

I'd approach with caution.  A good lacquer job is OK, but a bad one ...  Image Image

Right?

Black lacquer looks alright on saxes (still not my preference) but it always just looks cheap on trombones and trumpets. Why cover up something as beautiful looks as brass???

Image I don't know, I think they look pretty great. I suppose I do have unusual preferences and enough horns that I can get plenty of brass with just one horn colored like that.  I'd want to make sure who did it though like others mentioned. The only one I'd probably trust to buy in that condition unless I played it first would be the Yamaha Black Phoenix model that was offered in limited supply.

King did offer it with black lacquer. They didn't promote it too much. They did it at the same time as they did the black lacquer King sousaphones.
They are just standard horns with black lacquer.

Maybe because they look killer! ... dunno. Just a guess.

Could be a coating that avoids sun damage for outdoor gigs.

Not necessarily. But it is not a main feature of a professional instrument. It should first play well and be well build. The colour is a secondary thing

This is one of the newer Eastlakes - any problems with it won't be due to the lacquer job, which looks factory to me.

JJ had a black lac horn, pretty sure it was done by King... they did a green one for Urbie as well, i think one for Kai that was blue or red or something - some of these came up on the ebay about 10 or 12 years ago if i remember right.

They didn't do many.
