Since I can't figure out where else to post this, here's a piece from my junior recital. It's Lantier's Introduction, Romance, et Allegro, and it's probably the piece I played best on the recital. Recording quality isn't great, but I figured I'd post it because there aren't many recordings of it available (only Denson Paul Pollard's Up From Below as far as I know). Criticism encouraged!

You've got some really nice things happening Corey!

The recording quality was a bit hard to listen through, but it sounds like you make a nice big ringing sound, and you made some sense of a piece that's fairly difficult musically. The phrasing choices aren't all obvious, and you did a nice job of playing musically and with line.

My one real criticism would be that I would happily sacrifice some of the width of the sound you make in order to have a more clear, consistent pitch center. Your pitch wanders sometimes with dynamic and register changes, and I'd love to hear you blow right into the center all the time. You don't need to try so hard to make a big bass trombone sound all the time - you're doing it.

Thank you! I know the recording quality hurt it, but the pitch issues are something I'm working on fixing. I think I'm hearing it sound "bright" from behind the bell and trying to darken it up too much, causing (some of) the pitch issues.

Nils as always is killin', and it's interesting to see the big band using an electronics/DJ type element in the rhythm section, not as a gimmick, (at least on this tune) but just contributing to the groove. From 2007? Hmmm... Makes me wonder what they're up to these days?

Gees, there is a huge number of Nils Landgren videos on the internet and they cover a lot of styles. Here is one I found when looking at the previous one mentioned here. It's a lovely tune that I had not heard for a long time: "There Goes My Heart". It has a very simple guitar accompaniment and there is duo vocal with an unknown (to me) gal/guy(?) singing the harmonies. I love this recording!

Nils is a master of self promotion on the web. Have you noticed that if you put a famous trombonist's name into a search engine (google, whatever), you will also end up with a list of Nils Landgren videos? Maybe that is just a little annoying sometimes

but, as a marketing manager, I have to admire the way he keeps his name in front of the public. I say 'more power to him'.

I think Nils is one of the most under-recognized (is this a word?) great trombonists in North America, and can only hope his guerrilla marketing approach will gain him the attention he so richly deserves. Maybe it will get him hopping continents more often, too! Right on, Grah....

I don't usually have much time for doodle tonguing, especially in jazz solos. But in four part harmony like this arrangement, it sounds very good, as well as demonstrating impressive technique. Mind you, it took me a while to pick up where he was in the tune. In fact, I thought it was not 'I Love You' by Cole Porter at all for a while there.

Despite my quibbling, I like that a lot. Guess I'm just jealous.

We backed up Bill Watrous in the 80's, he played Spain, played a million notes, great performance...."lot of the same notes as Washington Post was born"

Dont practice till you get better ....was from a sax player friend of mine....

James Morrison on trombone and then trumpet. And then trombone... And so it goes; superb on both.
I imagine this might have been listed in the past (the YouTube clip has been up two years) but it's sure worth another look. He's considered one of the better trumpet players in the world... And not at all shabby on the trombone.

James Morrison plays all brass and reed instruments with equal facility, it seems to me. He is also a superb keyboard player!

The only problem is that my best mate, who is really a pro bass player and often plays with James when he comes up to Queensland, thinks he can play all the brass and reed instruments just like him. And he can't! I keep telling him that he should concentrate on playing trumpet like James and we will all be very happy.

Yes, I've seen vids of him on the keyboard and it seems like I read that sax was his first instrument?

I've always felt that if a person can really excel on one instrument it's only a matter of time and desire for them to excel on another. The thing is - few really have the ability to excel on just one instrument, and if they then try to play other instruments it seems an even weaker level is achieved... Does this sound about right?

Absolutely correct! James is just a brilliant fluke.

Mind you, we also had the American Tom Baker, who lived in Australia, and played absolutely brilliant trumpet, sax and trombone. He was great mates with Dan Barrett who also plays mean trombone and trumpet.
