i lack the knowledge of the mighty "poll" feature, methinks 

Click on the "Polls" home page. Look along to the right and you'll see an icon saying "Add poll". Click on that and a number of empty boxes will come up. Fill in as many options as you like (max ten, I think), a subject and a title question, then just click "Save" as you would for a normal post. You can add further options later, but don't forget to click "Add option" for each one.
