If you haven't heard Robin Eubanks with the new Dave Holland stuff/Chris Potter, you must. It's groundbreaking, IMO.

I like the new group very much but it is hardly groundbreaking. I thought the opening chorus sounded very MJQ-ish.

Quote from: sabutin on Apr 27, 2010, 05:49PMDave Taylor's introductory bass trombone solo with The Mingus Big Band on my reorchestration and (slight) rearrangement of Mingus's The Shoes Of The Fishermans's Wife Are Some Jiveass Slippers.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtU0yCX96AU

Also...listen to how well in tune his tuba playing is later on. He is a master musician.

Trpt.solo: Jack Walrath

Piano solo: The inimitable...and sadly, passed from this good earth...John Hicks.

Art Baron sitting next to Dave looking strangely...happy ( Image Image Image Image Image Image)...and that's me waving my arms up front.

When I was leading the band...from its beginning through the first couple of years...I featured Dave every chance I got, contrary to the wishes of Ms. Mingus. It got us both out of the band, eventually. So it goes.

It was a great band.

So it goes.

Later...

Thanks a ton for this clip, Sam. I've really enjoyed what I've been able to hear Dave Taylor play, and that band is great to listen to too.

With all rights secured to post this, here's me playing Dave Barduhn's arrangement of "Bein' Green" with the GPC Jazz Band under the direction of Greg McLean. If my chops sound a little tired it's because I had been playing high and fast all night. It just makes the 8va at the end that much more exciting! Image

Here is some great bass trombone playing.

This is Martin van den Berg, bass trombonist of the Metropole Orkest in the Netherlands, playing Saturday Night is The Loneliest Night Of the Week,
as arranged and conducted by Patrick Williams, with the Metropole Orkest Big Band. This was part of a concert of his music, in October of last year. I was lucky enough to be in the audience and hear it live. Martin has such an amazing sound, and seems to play so effortlessly. Great to watch! Patrick Williams said himself this is the best he has ever heard this arrangement played!

Great piece, great band and what a great soloist! Obviously he had a great teacher  Image

In the beginning of the piece he very much reminds me of George Roberts.

Ha ha. I saw this post and I was just thinking that you must be about the most recorded trombonist on Youtube. I was then thinking "Hmmmm, I wonder who does all his filming??" Then I clicked on your video and lo and behold, saw this..... haHA!.. They've been uber supportive over the years. Mom can't NOT videotape a performance if she's there. A lot of the other videos are a camera (in video mode) on the music stand. YouTube is free advertising. I take complete advantage of that.

Thanks!

When the video start I did believe this was just a joke. When it was finish I just had a open mouth. It was fun but also what a performance? Unbelievable. I was just hoping for a big fat pedal note in the end on the trombone.  Some people are just unbelievable. Thanks for the link. I never get tired of people that make some fun and still can play like this. This could inspire even a stone to make music.

Keith Hunter from SJSU just posted videos of his senior recital at San Jose State. I got an update on it from a youtube subscription to him:
http://www.youtube.com/user/hehekeithy#p/u

Grondahl Concerto, Doolallynastics, few jazz pieces and Trombone Institute of Technology. Also, Luliby(sic) for Alto Trombone and Urlicht for Solo Trombone and Piano.

His earlier recitals had some good pieces as well (Dorsey's Trombonology, Stephen Rush's "Rebellion", Arrows of Time. Well worth the time to watch.

He posts here (occasionally) under the same name (Hehekeithy).

Enjoy.

Probably old news (Happened in 2k5, posted in late 2k8) but I didn't see any link to it in this folder.

Youtube video of Jorgen van Rijen playing Ropartz's Piece for Trombone and Piano:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lE9mlJgDqQ&feature=related

His control over the instrument, his range of dynamic options, and his musicality in this video are unparalleled (Yes, even by Mr. Alessi's own Ropartz video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eTEKzZRYgY&feature=related ).

To say I am blown away would be a crass understatement.

Not quite a video, but Small's jazz club in NYC offers a great archival service; you can listen to almost any show they've had in the past 5 years.

Thanks for that - it' a great site. I dig their "reel-to-reel" mp3 player. Also, the drawing of the trombone on the archive page is a trigger horn. You used to never see that.

This is such an incredible resource!  And judging by the recording quality of the Willner/Davis clip, it's decently recorded, especially since it doesn't sound horrible on my laptop speakers at the moment.

Here's a piece I played as soloist. It's a bit strange... dark sounding... but I like it.

I also played some multiphonics parts (overdubed after the original recording.)

Hope you like it although the overall (sound quality & music) is not that great and the style is strange.
