That was a lot of fun, Leif.  Note that Charlie was playing a Conn Ballroom (probably a 38H).  Dorsey got his start with Dixieland bands and eventually went to Paul Whiteman (with his brother Jimmy) before they went off and started their own band.  Dorsey could play some rip-snorting tailgate when he wanted to.

Notice something...

When Dorsey plays that unaccompanied long set of phrases in his own style, his time is absolutely impeccable. But when he plays the 'corny" stuff later, he's
all over the place.

Just sayin'...if you really hear what you are playing...from the soul, from the mind and body...your time is going to be fine. If not? Well...we all need to work, right?

Whenever I hear people tell their students to "work on their time," I want to step in and say "Work on your musicality...with no artificial timekeepers, just you and your horn...and your time will develop accordingly.

Just sayin'...

I a fairly sure that my lifelong interest in Traditional Jazz was sparked by listening to my Mum and Dad's 78 collection of Clambake Seven recordings in those years immediately after WWII. I still like them:

Even the ones with gf Edythe Wright:

Great links on this thread. I'm wondering if anyone knows exactly what is being chanted by the band in behind the lead vocals on "Marie"

I can pick up almost all of it...here's what I think it is...please feel free to correct the text and repost... Image)

Oh Marie tis true
Just waiting’ for me
Girl ‘o my dreams I want you, I do
Have a little faith in me
Tra la la la la
Here we go crying’ again
Take me darlin’, take me

On a night like this
We go pettin' in the park
Oh the way I like it darlin’ I’m yours
Spoken as you came to me
Oh body and soul,
I’m in Heaven
Living’ in a great big way, MAMA!
