Wash that sock on your trombone stand!

Post by ttf_Brer Cottonmouth »

I keep my trombones most of the time on their stands, so it's easy to grab whichever one I want to play that session. And those stands have the standard scratch-inhibiting sock covering the end that sticks into the bell. I've noticed lately that the sock can be damp, no doubt from setting a bell with condensation on it. And I noticed last night that that sock can have a musty smell to it. So, if you're like me and keep your trombones on a stand, wash that sock every once in a while to help keep the nasties out of your instrument—and your lungs.

A very good thought! I am meticulous about cleaning my bone right through (brushes, pull-throughs and the works) and re-applying slide oil every time I play but I must admit the sock has not had a wash for some time.  Image

Lack of attention to detail, maybe?

Actually the video on its own is probably all you need:

.... although I always clean the inner and outer slides and bell section separately. Admittedly, I do not have all those little pipes to worry about because all of my bones are straight Bb with no F attachment. Certainly easier to clean and, in my opinion, sound right for jazz group and big band work.
