The Other site

Is anyone else having trouble with TTF? Seems to take 3 or 4 minutes to respond to each request, if it does at all.

I'm getting a "site too slow to respond" error.

Good thing we have the lifeboat.

I think, after reading some of their comments about the creation of this site, there are some on TTF would rather hack off their left foot with a cold chisel than come over here.

At least there are 344 of us that can continue to function in this capacity while the other site is down.

Right now (Tuesday, 5/24, 12:30pm ET / 9:30am PT) I can't get TTF to load. Very frustrating. I'd prefer Trombone Chat IF everyone else was here!

Upon the Shires of Wessex, the King or trombones was on a quest for Bach himself whilst riding his trusty Yamaha. Selmer had he ever seen a clearer night as he gazed upon the moons of Jupiter. Reflecting on the days of Olds he remembered what had set on the quest Holton to none but himself. Tired of Getzen Greenhoe’d by the likes of sir Edwards, his wits had run Thein. He had thought to bring one of the Williams boys, but the idea seemed a bit Bundy. So, ever more he would Huttl about on his own and never be Conn'd again..

I really have no idea why I did that.

Is there really not any way of backing up all the threads on TTF? Even if those threads were just accessible without posting it's such a wealth of knowledge

I don't own enough storage to do that. We are talking about a few Terabytes of information (like over 10). Richard has it backed up by the Server Farm (or wherever he stashes TTF). We'd love to have that information, but it's his and his alone.

I have saved copies of any threads I find particularly interesting or historically valuable. I encourage others to do the same if there is information they do not wish to lose.

I read the "rules" once a long time ago and took away that all posts are public, therefore anyone can back up any or all posts and make them public again with impunity if they desire.

It's pretty inevitable that TTF will remain busier than TC for the foreseeable future, so long as it doesn't suddenly disappear. We all want to reference that giant database of discussions, and we are all fond of it, hoping that somehow a solution occurs that keeps it going, or at the very least that that final outage will somehow be indefinitely postponed...

While no solution is implemented, we're all very grateful for the effort currently going in to duplicate its function here (though not its content). But my personal hope, which I suspect is quite a common one, is that in time TTF will be healed and the need for this site will disappear. There isn't enough forum-style trombone discussion around to service two competing sites, and so naturally TTF tends to retain what it already has while it is able to.

By the way Byron, how have you saved threads? Is there a tool that does a nice job of this?

Are you sure about this Bruce? There are about 1Million posts on TTF. 10TB would imply about 10MB per post! Seems a little high. Since there are no attachments allowed, I estimate the total storage nearer to 6GB. That would allow approximately 5K text characters per post + 1K of housekeeping data (which is hugely generous), or about 1000 written words per post (on average - again, very generous).

The whole DB should fit easily on an 8GB USB key.

That's what I was thinking

By the way, and this is not a shot at TTF or any other forum, but the way topics are rehashed over and over again, it wouldn't take long before any new forum held 90% of the same data as the old. It compounds the problem that the search engine on TTF is t very good

Attachments used to be possible - I remember attaching a couple of videos to a TTF post years back to illustrate use of the G/D bass trombone.

There is a gallery with a lot of images.
Many posts have attached images in some other file.

Right now the Trombone Forum Gallery is in a "no write" mode so you can't upload any more stuff. But there's an awful lot there.

I'm sure if we were to create a backup and try to import it to this site a lot of chaff could be eliminated, but you can't selectively backup that way.
