Hi, You should talk to Chuck at Hickeys, I just got my new Marcus Bonna F series , and he had some excellent information on how to protect the bell if you had to check it. One suggestion was to put a Styrofoam cone in the bell, cut it off so only approx. an inch sticks out of the bell, so if it gets bumped "down" the rim of the bell is protected since it isn't going to hit, the pressure is on the center where the cone is.
Hope this helps,
M Broughton

Thanks for the info...I’m thinking about purchasing an Eastman bass case or an SKB 462 case...not really trying to break the bank!

Eastman isn't a great flight case, and the 462 doesn't fit a bass trombone.

The idea for the cone comes from Doug Yeo.

Sam Burtis had an SKB golf bag case that he'd put his gig bag into and pad the area between the gig bag and the outside of the golf case with clothing. For some reason the baggage gorillas tend to go easier on golf gear.

If checking an instrument, I wouldn't use anything besides my Tank case. It was expensive, but I've flown with it so many times that it has paid for itself. These usually aren't available used which might tell you how good they are.

I have Walt Johnson Bass Trombone case with wheels specifically designed for checking. I'll sell for $450 plus shipping. These are the gold standard. Basically impossible to find, no longer made. (Sold my large tenor Walt Johnson a few years back, really sorry I did. )

I think generally you're right. I did have this one anecdote, though. I was on tour one time - we got off the plane...got our horns, and the guy playing second trombone had his small-bore in a Walt Johnson case. I don't know how this happened but the bell was squished - like the case did it. Very odd. Probably had to be TSA.
