Clip on mic

Post by SaigonSlide »

Hey everyone. I've read the posts about mics, but I don't want to drop so much money. I'm looking for a good quality, easy to use, clip on mic for performance. Specifically rock, salsa stuff. Price point is $300 or so.

Specific questions are:

Is wireless important?

Condenser vs dynamic important?

Do wires bother you?

Thanks everyone!

Save your money and just buy a SM57. If you want something around the $300 price point for live check out the Share SM7B.

But if you really want a clip on mic I like the Audio Technica one, especially for the price. I've had sound guys tell me there's no difference between the Shure and AT clip on mics, and it's 1/2 the price. Most people I know that buy a clip on mic end up trying to sell them.

I’m using a Shure clip on wireless mic. My experience is that there is more freedom than with a stand mic. Very convenient. I would never go back to a stand mic in situations where I use a clip on now.

Rock band I used to play with had five horns, all on Audio Technica wireless - they are great. Mostly ATW-2110 units if I remember correctly.

Bought my setup with some gig money, made stage cleaner, horns mobile, and no issues then or since:
  • Audio-Technica ATM350cW Cardioid Condenser Clip-on Instrument Microphone
  • Audio-Technica ATW-2110a UniPak® Body-pack System
You can go cheaper on the microphone and be fine for live applications.

(that's also the rig I use for tuba, just drop it down inside!)

I've been using a Shure 98H Beta for trombone and trumpet work or over ten years. It's reliable and well built. The sound is great. I don't know the difference between the 98H and the PGA98, but it's about half the price.

Clip-ons, as opposed to mics on a stand, are great for live performance because you don't have to worry about how far you are from the mic. Volume is consistent, even if you aren't standing in the exact same place all of the time. The only problem I've ever had with the 98H is that sometimes sound guys don't know hat you have to use phantom power. I prefer wired for simplicity.
