Cleaning Rods in MB cases

Post by Burgerbob »

I am a stickler for having a clean slide, so I make it a point to have a cleaning rod with me most of the time.

Unfortunately, most fancy cases don't really make allowance for this. But, at least in these two cases, it's still possible!

In the standard case, the rod is held in place by some foam inserts and can't contact the horn in any way.

In the screwbell case, it makes just slight contact with my Gb side so I put a rag in to prevent scratching. Otherwise it has no room to move and won't ding anything.

Of course, YMMV with different horns and interior setups.

Aidan,

I also am a stickler for slide cleanliness. My go-to is the H-W Brass-Saver cleaning brush. I use the "trombone" version for my small-bore tenors, and the "tuba" set for my bass trombone and large-bore tenors. These brushes do just about everything you can do with your rod and cloth; can be used to wipe clean and dry both inner and outer slides (including the crook); and nestle gently in ANY trombone case. (I roll mine up and place in a Zip-lock bag.) Best investment I've ever made in trombone maintenance!

I also use an H-W brass-saver, but it stays at home. Instead of a 1-piece cleaning rod, I use a 3-piece rifle cleaning rod that I got at Walmart. I can take it apart, wrap it in a hand towel and stick it in the bell if I need it for a long gig.

I should have mentioned that I bought one of these!

However, I didn't find that it cleaned the outer slide very well, not like a cleaning rod with cheesecloth. It was good in the tub for a wet clean.

And then, of course, my cat saw it as a toy and ripped it apart! Oops.

I got a rifle cleaning rod with a patch pusher attachment on the end I filed into a nice, founded blunt shape. I slip a slide-o-mix Terry cloth sleeve on the rod and it works perfectly. It breaks down into 3 sections that I put in a large crown royal whiskey bag along with the curled up SOM Terry cloth sleeve and stick it in the exterior pouch on my Gonna bass bone case.

That would be "Bonna bass bone case". Spell check makes my life interesting at times! Try scat singing to Siri on an iPhone some time...strange results!
