I might be on a great deal for a holton 158. But I want to be sure before I buy. Condition is great according to the pics.
So... how much would you pay for a holton tr 158?

The seller says its a 158-37. Anyone knows what that might mean?

$425 is a nice price for that one on ebay, but it may not stay there. I don't think it will go much above $500 because of the condition (dents). A perfect one might fetch $700-800. No idea what the -37 means.

I think the 37 is the number of the slide tenon. It doesn't mean anything, it's a production number to make sure they match up parts correctly.

On Holtons the only number that pertain to the model designation is the three digits right after the TR.

If it has a valve I guess it could go for about $600 in an auction. I would not bid that because I have to add $100 for shipping and another $200 in taxes to get it here. Ebay prices are now insane. It has reached a level it is better to buy a used horn in one of the shops here instead. If the 158 has no valve then i guess the horn is not worth as much.

For Tom's benefit: 158 has a valve. The straight version is 156.

Is that so? I have a Holton 256 which I understand is the screw-bell version of the straight 156 (in fact it says TR156 on the tenon anyway.) It is dual bore .547/.559 with a 9" bell...so a bigger beast than my 158.

I bought a dual bore 156 (same specs as yours) in about 1988. I understand they changed from single to dual bore at some point.

I've played a TR159 with dual bore 547/562 and a valve - the TR156 is the straight version. The TR158 is a single bore 547 instrument, right? Or am I forgetting things?
