Getzen 3508 vs 1050

Post by hyperbolica »

I haven't played either instrument, the 3508 or the 1050. But I'm interested in a comparison between the two and also between these and some standard like a Conn 6h or a King 3b or Bach 16. How do these horns compare.

I've played and sat next to the 3508. IMO quite a vanilla sound. I don't want to say boring, but...

I’ve played both.

Both good solid horns ,
1050 like some posts say does remind me of a 6h very good easy to play horn.

The 3508 that I had and later sold was a hell of a player. I know the purchaser is very happy with it. I liked it better than the Yamaha 891z , I also liked it better than a newer era 3b silversonic I had at the time. The example I had was an awesome horn. Warm sound , warmer than 891z and warmer than my dual bore 16 , it’s one I wouldn’t mind still having fwiw

Both good solid very underrated horns

I've played a 891z and really loved it. Just a really great all around horn, probably my favorite horn of that size. I've currently got an Olds Recording, and think it may be just a bit heavy and/or dark. I need something that feels light and nimble, but has a flexible sound. I guess kind of like a 6h. Maybe that answers it for me. Still like to play both, though. Thanks for the tips.

I acquired Trevor's Getzen 3508. It outplays a Conn 48H hands down. (And I'm a "Conn guy!") Much easier to play delicately, but doesn't break up when played more forcefully. I've only had it during the Covid shutdown, so haven't had a chance to play it with others. I'm still hoping that it will replace a treasured 3BSS, now no longer in my possession, as lead trombone in big band. :idk:

I have never played a Getzen 1050. Can't really comment yet about the "vanilla" flavor of the 3508. (Isn't that what folks say about Yamaha trombones?) Ask me when my big bands start rehearsaing again!

So far, I love the 3508! (Marcinkiewicz ET4 "Lloyd Ulyate" seems to be a fine match.) Thanks, Trevor! :good:

Wow. I'm a 48h nut myself, so that's a great comparison. Thanks!

I haven't been much of a Getzen fan in the past, but I understand there's a difference between old and new Getzens. A lot of people say great things about the 3508.

I have noticed the vanilla Yamaha thing, but in my experience it has again been mostly older small bore Yamahas that suffered from that.

The 3508 has the option of red or yellow bell. Anybody want to comment on that? I'd probably prefer the red, since I'd prefer the color over the projection. I don't think I need a lot of extra help in the projection area, I'm usually trying to tone things down.

Also, does anyone know if the 3508 and 1050 slides are interchangeable? With the 3508 being almost an Edwards, and the 1050 being closer to a student horn, I could see that the tenons might be different.

1050 definitely not student horn quality , I think I read somewhere Steve shires may have helped design it pre shires ? Not sure if that’s true.

The 3508 isn’t too dark like a recording can be. The one I had and sold I was a huge fan of.

1050 also was a great horn , can’t go wrong either but if I had the choice I’d go 3508 again. The vanilla sound for me was the 891z wasn’t a fan.

I think if you go the red brass 3508 you may be a bit darker similar to your recording I think the yellow brass is a great overall horn.
