Strange 88H spotted

Post by SwissTbone »

I spotted this trombone on a classifieds board:

It says it is a elkhart 88H. But it doesn't look like one to me... Anyone knows what it might be?

Thanks!

Yeah, that's not an 88H but it does appear to be a good condition single bass (with TIS!)

Tuning in slide (never noticed that) would make it a 60H I think.

Conn nomenclature is esoterica.

It looks like a 60h to me. TIS and that wrap.

Tuning in bell, too. Looks like a 71H bell section. Appears to be in good shape...

Most definitely NOT an 88H. Might be a Frankenhorn. Bell section looks like a 60H. It have a smaller slide, like a 14H (1st iteration). If I read the description right, it was used in a professional orchestra.

Got an answer from the seller: 71h bell and 62h slide. Strange combination.

Then why did they list it as an 88H?

There is one thing for sure, that is not a Conn 88H, not by a long shot, the wrap, bell diameter, and TIS are the real giveaways that it is actually a Elkhart Conn 60H Bass Trombone, basically a single valve 62H. Also, the Conn 88H is a large bore tenor with F-attachment which are two completely different horns made by the same brand. So yeah, not even close to being an 88H.

No longer available. It really looked like an original 60H. Should have moved faster...
