Intonation, drones, and equal temperament

This idea came from one of the tuba forums but I've shamelessly stolen it.

The tuba player uses a wireless tuner on his bell, so that his tuner cannot hear the drone. Then he plays against the drone, tuning perfect intervals by ear, but then also tuning equal temperament intervals with the tuner, and listening to what those sound like against a drone.

A tuba might not be directional enough, but a trombone is. I just put a tuner a bit away from my drone (I have them as mp3 on a laptop and play them through my stereo). Even across the room the tuner picks up the drone, but when I point my bell near it and play, it hears me instead.

Sure, that makes sense.

Can your tuner do other temperaments than 12ET?
