Re: I took over a big band and I am officially insane!

If the bandmembers donate their pay to the band to buy charts, who owns the charts? If the band breaks up, what happens to the book? Something I’ve been thinking about.

Thank you for the email. 12ML all day long.

Question:

I liked the rim and response of a Schilke 51 but found a little dark and the high range tended to thin out. What Hammond mpc might be more suitable? Large shank.

The takeaway for me is that they were nearly all great horns but, for the most part, it’s not the horn. The exception was a 70s Corporation Bach 59. I received more compliments playing that horn than all the rest combined.
Bach 59? Whats that?

I’ve had the good fortune of having at one time or another owned nearly all of my dream horns. In no particular order: conn 62H, Edwards and Shires basses; King 3B/F, Tennessee Williams 6, Burbank Williams 6, Minick “100H”, Elkhart 6H, 1963 Elkhart 88H, and Shires .525 and .547 tenors. I’m not fussing too much over .001”. It’s a trombone, not a jet engine.

Any suggestions wrt what might work well in a 16M slide? I’m leaning towards a Kanstul H8.

Source for .508/.509 leadpipes?

I’ve acquired a Bach 16M slide with a set of sketchy press-fit lead pipes.

Does anyone know of a source for .509 pipes (or .508 - I’m sure 1/1000 of an inch isn’t going to make much of a difference).

I have tried for years to develop a fast trill. Unsuccessfully. I wonder if it’s something some can do and some not. Slow twitch vs fast twitch muscles maybe.

This comes up from time to time. I’m wondering if there’s anything new out there. Musescore - free. Finale/Sibelius- the standard, but expensive for a hobbyist. Printmusic- Finale light, buggy and last updated in 2014. Presonus Notion was well regarded and not too expensive. I need enough staves for...

I tried a new 88H at the LMS and, in May, compared a new 88H with a Courtois when I was in London. I was quite disappointed in the 88H.

I was checking out a Yam 356G today in the LMS while my guitar was having a bit of work done on it. For someone whose main thing is a .547, it would be an ideal second horn, I think. .500/.525, trigger, 8” gold brass bell. Pretty versatile.

Re: I took over a big band and I am officially insane!

We’re not going to trade copies of our music for copies of other band’s tunes. Partly out of respect for copyright, partly out of not wanting to play the same music as everybody else. I’ve got some stuff that falls into some grey areas: a Zappa arr’t that I bought but which I’m sure didn’t have the ...

Re: I took over a big band and I am officially insane!

We are making some progress in moving the band forward. There are 4 of us who have taken the lead. Two will take turns conducting, we’ve secured our rehearsal space for a year, and we have free use of the book until Christmas. There’s money in a band account and we’re looking at two or three gigs ne...

Who in Their Right Mind Plays an 11C? For obvious reasons, I’ve been listening to and thinking about Bill Watrous this week. I first heard him in about 1974. I was astonished then and, listening to some recordings, Bonified, MWR, I’m still impressed, although less by his speed than by his ballad pla...

World Cup. Very intriguing tournament so far. Italy didn’t qualify. Germany finished last in its group. Argentina, Portugal and Spain knocked out in the 16. How much for charts?

The leader of our band is leaving the country. It might be possible for those of us who wish to continue to buy the charts.

Assuming a new cost of $75/arrangement, what would you pay? Original, commercially available stuff, like, say, a Mintzer chart.

Re: I took over a big band and I am officially insane!

Our leader, who started the band 7 years ago, just announced he is moving to another country. Leaves a bunch of interesting questions, like, the band’s bank account, ownership of the charts. I assume the $ and at least some of cost of the charts came from gigs for which no one was ever paid. 1/3 of ...

“Just like music, relationships take practice and maintenance.”

Indeed.

Trombone finished in early May. A couple of guitar things this month, and then dark until Sept.

It might be jet lag, lousy weather, or sub-clinical depression, but I’m not feelin’ it these days.

I have not had to pay duty shipping US-built horns back into the US (from Canada). There is paperwork that kicks in at the $800 level. There is additional paperwork that is required at the ~$2700 level (a bond for potential duties/taxes).

The shipping cost appears reasonable to me.
